When I was between apartments a few years ago and deciding which new area of the city I wanted to move to, a friend was trying to help me figure it out.
she asked, “Well where do you envision yourself living?”
I said, “West Village in the 1960s.”
If you don’t know it yet, I’m clearly hung up on the Village of past decades.
Obviously that’s an impossible place to live. So I figured for this week’s flashback/history newsletter, I’d simply pretend.
To carry out a plan of making a life for myself in Greenwich Village circa 1960, I turned to the Village Voice’s awesome digital archive of old editions.
Here’s what I came up with.
Find an apartment (1963):
$125 /month rent on Perry Street for a furnished apartment is a pretty good deal. But do I want to want to be on the 1st floor? Eh.
Get a job (1962/1970):
I think I can pass as a head-on-her-shoulders gal.
Support local artists (1961):
Get involved in the community:
Establish my local liquor store:
I’ll need something to bring to those casual atmosphere, beautiful apartment, song-swapping parties.
Become civically engaged (1963/1962):
Choose a go-to cafe (1964):
Land a date:
Find a cheap place to eat (1963):
Discover new music to play through the airy windows of my new apartment:
Get in touch with the cosmic kids:
